I started in the fitness industry in 2015 as a Personal Trainer. Almost 9 years later I am a Human Foundations practitioner, a Pilates/Yoga instructor, a breathwork coach, and a Functional Mobility coach. My experience has taught me what method of training works best for the individual rather than a one size fits all answer. Here, I want to share what I've learned and build a community training clients online.
Kyle zangeThe 5 Levels of Fitness Awareness (and how to get to the top) |
You're out of touch. You joined the gym to:
This is level 1 in the Fitness Awareness spectrum. Here are the other 4.
|
In Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, physiology (health) is our first step to fulfillment. If we learn how to develop our body, we satisfy a fundamental need.
You started exercising to satisfy your need to survive. You know health is important. That’s why you signed up for a gym membership. Here is level 1:
Level 1, like earlier, is all about having an external understanding of your problems.
⦁ People don’t treat you the way you want to be treated.
⦁ You’re in pain and don’t know why.
⦁ You don’t like the way you look.
You’re at this level if you sign up to a gym membership as your first option when it comes to solving your problem.
This is better than hitting your phone on a table when it freezes, but not by much.
Here’s why:
This is a rough place to be and a lot of people get stuck here. Know this. There is light at the end of the tunnel.
Level 2 is the paralysis by analysis zone.
You know your problem (overweight, no muscle, weak, etc.) and you know there is a solution out there. The issue is that
THERE IS SO MUCH INFORMATION
You hop on the good ol’ interweb and type in “how to lose weight” “how to get out of pain” “how to get a 6 pack” “how to get rid of hip dip”
and get millions of search results.
1 page says you need to count calories and another says tracking calories leads to anorexia.
Who do you believe? If you want to do years of research and find the common denominator truth you can.
Or, you can move on to level 3.
The Experimenter knows that actions speak louder than words. You ditch the complicated research articles saying “L-Citrulline malate is worse than pure L-Citrulline” and hit the gym.
Here’s the problem.
You spin your wheels, doing random exercises and routines (push, pull, legs, anyone?)
So, you turn to friends for advice. Those friends are in the same boat as you.
“You can’t solve a problem with the same thinking that created the problem.” - Einstein
You all think the same. A proper routine made for you is hard to come by when your friends all use routines that work for them.
Here’s where the gold comes in.
The Community Builder KNOWS that an individual routine is hard to come by without help.
You also know that asking a couple friends for help gets you nowhere fast. You need a community.
“The average of all advice is the truth” - Unknown
You need lots of opinions compiled together, and the gold revealed. To do this, you need a group of people to agree on some ground rules for Fitness.
Once you have these ground rules you become:
The hero's journey is in everyone’s story.
It can be as simple as “lose 10 lbs”. The point is to have a direction.
Create an iteration BEFORE you have a plan. What is the one thing you can do right now to make progress towards losing 10 lbs? Do that.
That iteration gave you so much information that you can use for step 4.
Now that you have information, you can strategize. This is level 4 thinking. Build a community with what you’ve experienced and collect data.
When you have a community of people you can bounce ideas off of and get advice from, you reduce the amount of time you waste on ineffective methods. This also allows you to put all of your focus in the areas that you and your community proved to be effective.
